Happy New Story Sunday, Daily Tomorrow readers! This week, we have an outstanding oeuvre by the the Dutch multi-media artist Joachim Heijndermans. I'll leave it to the reader to decide if it lives up to its name. - The Editor
The Masterpiece
By Joachim Heijndermans
When the first light appeared at the start of this place that was called 'the universe' by some, 'existence' by others, or—by a select few—the 'this and now and where we live in and where we keep our stuff safe from the rain', he was already there. His origins were a mystery. Some argued that he came from within the dark, simply stepping out of the void as if it were a door. Some believed he stood between existence and non-existence, in a plane between what was and wasn't, simply waiting for just the right light. Whatever the case, what could be agreed on was his name; in that, he had none, as his existence preceded the very concept of giving names to one another. To most, he would be known as 'the Artist'. Over the many of many years, he would collect new names like how one would collect stamps or rocks or stickers or stamped stickers of rocks or those little green things you find under benches, but it was the title of 'Artist' that would stick forever. Everything else about him was a complete mystery. All that was known about him was that he was the Artist and that he would make a masterpiece.
Joachim Heijndermans is a writer, artist, filmmaker, and SFWA member from the Netherlands. His work has been published in a great number of publications, featured on podcasts and adapted to television and film, including the Netflix animated series 'Love, Death & Robots'.
