I think most fantasy stories are a combination of real events (or places) and fantasy. This one coalesced around a childhood friend of mine who later studied to become an astrophysicist at Princeton. He invited me one day to Princeton, to see his rooms and then we went to the Institute for Advanced Science, a modern building where Einstein and other famous physicists had had their offices. (Einstein could be thought of as a kind of a modern magician-- a scientist-magician.) The grounds were bucolic—green-lawned and lined with trees. Not far from the Institute, you could hear the players on the tennis courts.
