Leaving the Nest — Afterword

Colonization, spreading humanity out across the skies, is possibly the height of arrogance, unfettered hubris. But in our defense we would argue we are no different than any species in desiring self-perpetuation and an ever-expanding future for our progeny.

Of course, in any specific case it will always be difficult to evaluate the success of our actions. Melanie has long since drifted out of range and we may never receive the rest of her story. We’ll have no final actions, either disappointing or redeeming or mundane, upon which to judge the success of her life.
