A few years ago I visited India with my mother and brother. We went as tourists on this occasion, travelling from Delhi east through the holy city of Varanasi then on to Kolkata. I hadn’t realised, but Kolkata is where my maternal grandfather grew up.
While exploring the centre of the city, the thoroughfare Park Street, Mum pointed out the tiny apartment my grandfather had stayed in while he’d been studying at university. As an orphan, he didn’t have much support and struggled to study while having enough money to survive.
